Every technological advance, the clinical examinations are becoming more modern and powerful. Nowadays, it is possible, from the ultrasound, see the baby face of details, monitor fetal development and perform tracking anomalies.
Ultrasound is the most important examination to be performed during pregnancy. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), should be performed at least three ultrasound examinations during pregnancy, each at a specific time. This guidance applies only to pregnancy without any complications, with normal prenatal care, without any risk. In the case of twin pregnancy or any other feature that requires more frequent monitoring, only the doctor can assess what the frequency of ultrasound, as well as other tests to be performed.
Segundi Dr. Leynalze Lins Ramos dos Santos, diagnosis expert imaging, for this pregnancy without any complications, the first ultrasound, called morphological the first quarter, to be held between 11 and a half weeks and 14 weeks of gestation.
“At this stage, even though the baby is not yet fully formed, it is possible to evaluate several characteristics in order to track defects. We found, for example, the measurement of skin fold to see if there is a change, and the presence of nasal bone. Babies with Down syndrome, for example, do not have that bone or, as have, is smaller than the other, “he explains.
For this test, the pregnancy is very important. If it exceeds 14 weeks, the accuracy is not the same.
“In this examination that the mother will have the best forecast of the probable date of delivery, as the measure of the baby is more accurate, since it still fits entire screen.”
The morphological ultrasound of the second quarter, which should be done between 21 and 24 weeks, all the baby’s organs are already formed.
“We have at this stage the opportunity to conduct a study deepening of fetal anatomy and thus detect any defects. This is extremely important so that in case of any problems, pregnancy can be monitored more closely and all arrangements made for the delivery. You may need surgery to fix the problem soon after birth or sometimes even before birth. “
Another important item to be evaluated in this survey is the length of the cervix, performed with abdominal transducer for transvaginal, warns Dr. Thomaz Gollop, associate professor in medical genetics from the University of São Paulo, “when shortened, we have an important prematurity risk sign. “
The expert points out that anomalies incompatible with life can be detected at this point. Among them, anencephaly.
“Morphological ultrasound second quarter, and even the first quarter, after 12 weeks, can diagnose with 100% security fetuses with anencephaly.” According to Dr. Thomaz, other severe fetal anomalies incompatible with life and can also be identified with certainty only by this imaging.
In the third quarter, for 34 weeks back, is a third fundamental examination, explains Dr. Leynalze.
“Obstetric ultrasound of the third quarter is performed with the use of color doppler. This equipment evaluates the umbilical artery, which carries blood to the baby and mother’s nutrients. If the flow is not good, the baby may stop gaining weight. In some situations, we may conclude that it will be better off than in the mother’s womb, and the pregnant woman is referred to a C-section immediately. “
Another factor observed in this examination reveals the expert is the middle cerebral artery, located in the baby’s head. “In the past, the parameter for fetal distress was the change in heartbeat. Today we know that long before present change in heartbeat fetal distress can be detected by changes in blood flow that goes to the baby’s head. “
“When we are suffering, this artery is dilated to provide increased blood flow, protecting the body,” explains Dr. Thomaz.
